RAS Avian Defender Award Issued to Dr. Mitchell Byrd

For a lifetime of bird conservation, Richmond Audubon Society is honored to announce that Dr. Mitchell A. Byrd receives the "Avian Defender" Award for 2008. This award is only given to those who have gone beyond the pale in defending our state’s avian species. In a time when so many of our species are threatened with extinction, this award is one way to inform Virginians about an individual’s good work, and about the importance of wildlife.

National Audubon Society - 2007 Annual Report Posted

“Few sights rival the awe-inspiring majesty of a migratory flock winging its way across the sky—hundreds or even thousands of individuals move as one toward their single destination. At its best, Audubon mimics these amazing creatures. Our individual members, supporters, Chapters, state offices, programs, departments, and diverse partners all move together as one toward our shared vision of a brighter tomorrow.

The ultimate destination for the Audubon flock is a world of healthy habitats, where birds, other wildlife, and people can thrive. Our challenges are many and varied, as will be the stops we make along the way. Still, as it has from our very beginnings, Audubon’s unparalleled ability to unite people behind common goals and strategies powers our success. We engage people in conservation action. We empower them with science, education, and policy expertise to create a culture of conservation and action. Together, we achieve results that would be impossible alone.”

Richmond Birding Hot Spot Checklists Now Available

In 2006, Richmond Audubon Society (RAS) began a data collection process to generate checklists for our favorite field trip locations around Richmond, Virginia. Information presented in the checklists below represent species sighted during RAS field trips or by field trip leaders on other dates. As data collection continues, these checklists will develop into a more complete picture of species abundance.
