RAS Helps First-graders Plant Gardens at Swansboro Elementary

On April 20, 2007, Nanette Sweet, Mary Arginteanu, and Robin Ruth, all members of RAS Kids, helped 45 first graders plant three flower gardens at Swansboro Elementary School in Richmond, Virginia.  For this project we also had the help of Chesterfield Master Gardeners.  We talked with the kids about the parts of plants and their functions, then everyone dug holes and planted flowers.  The stars for the day were earthworms, which the kids found to be fascinating.  We explained that the worms were good for the soil and all were returned to the ground intact.  RAS Kids has subsequently done some foundation planting around the courtyard (azaleas, spirea, etc.), greatly improving the overall appearance of the courtyard.  We have put up bird feeders and birdbaths and the bird population, previously nil, has mushroomed.  In addition to Robins and Grackles, we are now seeing Cardinals, Goldfinches, and House Finches.

This group of first-graders at Swansboro Elementary in Richmond is participating in a discussion with Mary Arginteanu about the different parts of plants and their functions. (Before)
