Administrative: Important Birding Areas (IBAs)
Recognized IBA Locations in Virginia
The following site descriptions include the 19 IBAs that have been recognized to date by the Virginia IBA Technical Committee in alphabetical order. Site descriptions include a map showing the location of each IBA within the state, a more detailed map illustrating the approximate boundaries of each site and the major management units within it, a description of the birds and habitats found at each site, and an explanation of the primary conservation threats that influence bird populations.
The site and species information contained in these reports was compiled based on IBA site nomination forms and personal communication with land managers and local experts. Some additional information was culled from online reports such as the U.S. Forest Service Revised Resource Management Plans. Nearly all reports have been reviewed by at least one site expert for accuracy. A full peer review of these reports will be undertaken before finalizing.
