For The Birds: Bird Houses

Bird Houses

There are nearly as many different shapes and sized of bird houses as there are species of birds, almost. While most bird nest under purely natural conditions, many will opt for a man made structure. Especially when designed to fit the needs and characteristics they instinctively look for in a nesting location. This is why it is important to know what bird you might want to attract before you buy or build a bird house. Something as minute as 1/8 of an inch difference in a Bluebird box hole diameter can be the difference of a Starling fitting into it or not. Houses can be designed for species such as: Bluebird, Chickadee, Titmouse Nuthatch, Carolina Wren , House Wren, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, Robin, Phoebe, Northern Flicker , Downy Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Wood Duck, Screech Owl, Kestrel, even for Bats, Butterflies and Ladybugs. If you wish to build you own boxes you can quickly find instructions and proper measurements and materials by searching the internet.
