The Richmond Audubon welcomes both members and non-members to MEETINGS and field trips. Come enjoy birding and fellowship with RAS. All are FREE unless otherwise noted.

March 13, Saturday at 7:45 AM - Belmead Mansion - Powhatan County

Built in the mid 1800’s, Belmead is located on approximately 1,200 acres of land overlooking the James River, located at 5004 Cartersville Road, Powhatan, VA. We are very fortunate to have access to this historic property. Meet at the Plaza Shopping Center parking lot at the corner of Academy Road and Route 60 in Powhatan. Be prepared for possible muddy conditions on the trails. There will also be an opportunity afterwards to tour the historic Belmead mansion for those who are interested.

March 13, Saturday at 11:00 AM - Richmond City Heron Rookery Tour (EVERY SATURDAY IN MARCH)

Come join Richmond Audubon Society and Richmond City Park's Ralph White as we share this avian treasure right in the heart of downtown Richmond! Over 40 nests have been counted at this rookery location on the James River. Spread public awareness of this growing heron nesting colony and help educate others. Bring your family and friends, bring scopes and extra binoculars to share. $5.00 Adults and teens, 12 & under FREE. Fee goes to help support the James River Park System. At the east end of East Byrd Street, where the road takes a sharp left turn, stay straight towards floodwall. At the stop immediatly ahead go to the right, there is a small parking lot just past the overlook. Parking is very limited so please carpool.

March 18, Third Thursday at 7:00 PM - Monthly Members Meeting and Pre-Meeting Dinner at 5:30 PM

Program: The Inger and Walter - Rice Center for Environmental Life Sciences. Presented by Anne Wright.
Anne Wright, VCU’s Life Science Outdoor Education Coordinator will present the program at the March meeting. Anne is known to many of us as an imaginative educator of children and adults. She will bring us up-to-date on the research and education taking place at VCU’s 340 acre Rice Center for Environmental Education. The site’s history includes use during the Colonial and Civil War periods and dates back to Native American use some 8,000 years ago.
Location: St. Luke Lutheran Church 7757 Chippenham Parkway, at the Custis Rd. and Chippenham Parkway intersection. Refreshments are served afterwards.

March 20, Saturday at 8:30 AM - Harrison Lake Fish Hatchery Paddle

Bring your canoes or kayaks, personal floatation devices (PFDs), water and snacks for a paddle on Harrison Lake. We meet at the lake parking lot.
DIRECTIONS: From I-295 take Exit 22A to Route 5 east. Go 12.6 miles and turn left on Route 658 (Kimages Road) and follow it for 0.4 miles. The hatchery is on the right. Turn left onto the dirt road and follow it to the lake.

April 15, Third Thursday at 7:00 PM - Monthly Members Meeting and Pre-Meeting Dinner at 5:30 PM

Program: “State of the Birds” Presented by Greg Butcher. Greg Butcher is Director of Bird Conservation for the National Audubon Society, working with the State of the Birds reports, the WatchList of birds of conservation need, effects of global warming on North American bird populations, BirdLife International, the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, Partners in Flight, and policy issues related to migratory birds. He has a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington. He has previously served as Director of Bird Population Studies at Cornell University’s Laboratory of Ornithology and is a Fellow of the American Ornithologists’ Union (AOU). All things considered, he’d rather be birding.

April 17, Saturday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM - Crestwood Nature Fair and Plant Sale

A free public event for families to experience exhibits on water, Virginia native plant species, live birds, insects, animals and reptiles. There will be hands on activities, role playing games, nature walks, a fishing derby and live music provided by the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra! Several organizations will be participating including an exhibit from the Richmond Audubon (RAS) Kids Group!

April 24, Saturday at 7:00 AM - Ashland Trolley Line with Linda and Bob Cole

Wear shoes/boot for possibly wet conditions. The walk is usually about 4 hours. Meet at Luck Chevrolet at 7 a.m. on Route 1 in Ashland five miles north of Green Top Sporting Goods on the left as you head north. Left at the light (at Luck Chevrolet) and right into Luck’s lot. Park on the left in the dirt along Ashcake Road. Please don’t block access to the rear of the building. Do not park among the new and used cars. Call Bob and Linda (798- 6618) for more details. April 24, Saturday at 8:00 AM to 9:45 AM - Bird Walk at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens

Come explore the beautiful gardens of Lewis Ginter. Meet in the rotunda of the visitor center. You must sign up in advance; there must be at least four people signed up by 9:00 PM the Wednesday before the trip or it will be cancelled. May 29, Saturday, VSO Piney Grove Field Trip

We will assemble at 5:20 AM at the Virginia Diner in Wakefield and carpool to Piney Grove as a group. Because of the sensitive nature of this area, the number of participants is limited to 15.
